Gouldian Finches have either a red, black or yellow head. Despite their distinct color variations, the red-headed, black-headed and yellow-headed Gouldian finches are all members of the same species.
Gouldian finches are a prime target for the illegal bird trade due to their vivacious coloration. This illegal trapping, along with predation, destruction of habitat, and susceptibility to a parasitic air-sac mite, has significantly reduced their numbers to an alarming state.
You can see Gouldian Finches in the Zoo’s finch exhibit near the admissions desk.
